World AIDS Day 2009 – Universal Access and Human Rights

Today marks the 21st Anniversary of World AIDS Day. This  year’s event focuses on universal access to prevention,  treatment and care as a critical human right. In the last year  1.9 million people became newly infected with HIV in Sub-  Saharan Africa. The region is also home to two thirds of  people living with disease and 75% of all AIDS related deaths  worldwide.

But with more than 30 HIV/AIDS projects AMREF works  closely with local communities and health councils to stop new  infections and help people with HIV live healthier lives.

Help fight the AIDS pandemic by making a World AIDS Day donation to AMREF Canada today.

New Video – Minimizing the Impact of HIV in Uganda

Now you can see how AMREF’s community outreach programs provide a vital link between vulnerable communities and health systems across East Africa.

Watch this new video and meet Simon Kabugo an AMREF outreach worker and his patient Tito (both pictured on the right). Tito is HIV positive and has been caring for his children by himself since his wife died from AIDS.

When Simon first visited Tito he was very sick and without medication. Find out how the outreach program has saved Tito’s life.
