Worst Health Inequality in the World: Mothers & Newborns

Having a child in Africa is one of the most dangerous things a woman can do, even the   most basic health care is a luxury.

African women face a 1 in 16 lifetime risk of dying from pregnancy or labour related   complications - women in a country like Canada face a risk of 1 in 30,000.  This   represents one of the most dramatic health inequalities in the world today.

But reducing maternal death is possible. Training health workers and investing in   mothers and families from vulnerable communities will save lives.

Find out more about maternal and child health in Africa, AMREF’s work and how you   can help.

New Class of Midwives Graduate in Southern Sudan

A new class of midwives recently graduated from AMREF’s Maridi Training Institute in Southern Sudan.

Opened in 1998 in the middle of a brutal civil war, the institute is now Southern Sudan's leading health education facility training
midwives and clinical officers.
Midwives drastically reduce Southern Sudan's grim maternal and newborn death rate - one of the worst in the world.

Learn more about the AMREF’s work training midwives and clinical officers at the Maridi Institute and find how you can help save mothers and newborns.
