Inside Perspective: Life in an Ugandan IDP Camp

AMREF Canada recently participated in IDP Awareness Day.

IDP stands for Internally Displaced Person, someone who has been forced to leave his  or her home, often from war, but remains in their country. IDPs outnumber refugees  two to one yet their plight receives little international attention.

Since 1998 AMREF has worked closely with IDP communities in northern  Uganda. Peace has followed 20 years of civil war, but more than half a million  people continue to live in IDP camps, which are overcrowded and lack clean water  and sanitation.

Good News from Africa: Health is Improving!

Most news we hear from Africa is tragic, but at AMREF we know African communities have endless potential.

This is why we were pleased to read The Globe and Mail Africa Correspondent Geoffrey York’s recent story, And Now for Some Good News highlighting dramatic improvements in health and education across Africa.

Want more good news about Africa? You can now read Brian Stewart's keynote speech from AMREF's 2009 African Marketplace Gala. Mr. Stewart is one of CBC's most acclaimed foreign correspondents with extensive experience reporting across Africa.
