Recognizing World AIDS Day 2009

December 1, 2009 marks the 21st Anniversary of World AIDS Day, a time to help raise awareness, reduce stigma and fight the global pandemic.

This year’s World AIDS Day theme is 'Universal Access and Human Rights'.

Although progress has been made in increasing access to HIV/AIDS services more than half of all people in need of antiretroviral therapies (ARVs) in poor countries still aren’t receiving them.

Africa continues to be the epicenter of the pandemic.

But with more than 30 HIV/AIDS projects across East Africa AMREF works to stop new infections and minimize the disease’s impact.

AMREF’s community outreach programs provide vital links between vulnerable communities and health systems.

Watch this video and meet Simon Kabugo, an AMREF outreach worker and his patient Tito. Tito is HIV positive and has been caring for his children by himself since his wife died of AIDS.

When Simon first visited Tito he was very sick and without medication. Find out how AMREF’s outreach program has saved Tito’s life.

You can also help fight the AIDS pandemic by making a World AIDS Day donation to AMREF Canada.
