AMREF and EcoWater Canada Bringing Clean Water and Sanitation to African Communities

AMREF Canada is thrilled to announce a new partnership with EcoWater Canada!

In celebration of World Water Day on March 22nd, EcoWater Canada will donate a portion of all sales in the month of March to support AMREF’s life saving water and sanitation programs.

To kick off the campaign EcoWater has introduced EcoRilla, a new community spokesperson to explain the importance of conserving and saving water.

EcoRilla is even featured in his own comic book!

   World Water Day

Designated by the United Nations in 1992, World Water Day is an international day of observance and action to draw attention to the more than 1 billion people worldwide that lack access to clean and safe water sources.

UN-Water has chosen Clean Water for a Healthy World as the theme for World Water Day 2010.

AMREF’s Work Fighting Water-borne Diseases

In sub-Saharan Africa, 2 in 5 people lack safe water.

A baby in sub-Saharan Africa is almost 520 times more likely to die from diarrhea than a baby born in Europe or North America.

Together with communities and district health councils, AMREF is improving water and sanitation in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Southern Sudan and South Africa.

For example, in Kibera, Kenya, local residents have installed latrines, bathrooms and water tanks with the support of AMREF. Clean-up campaigns have cleared drains and reduced refuse problems. We have set up school-based ‘wash clubs’, teaching children about hygiene and encouraging them to take the message home. Results show improvement – cases of diarrhea and intestinal worms have dropped by about 70% in target schools.
