Academic and Research Institutions

To ensure the highest quality of research and academic excellence, AMREF Canada partners with some of the leading academic institutions across the country.

The Community Development Centre: McMaster University, CIDA, Salama Shield Foundation

In 2005 AMREF in partnership with the Salama Shield Foundation, McMaster University and CIDA opened the Community Development centre in Lyantonde Uganda.

The Centre is designed for research, education and training and is equipped with a conference hall, a library, sport facilities, an internet café, several offices, and an HIV testing facility.

It is designed to ensure that community members have access to health information as well as HIV/AIDS testing and counseling. The centre provides opportunities for professionals, students, community members and visitors to learn from each other and contribute to the research and development programs.

The Centre’s specific activities include;

  • Community Education - programs for families related to health-care and nutrition
  • Mentorship Program - pairs 900 youth with ssenga (aunt) and koijja (uncle) mentors
  • HIV/AIDS Drama Group - provides HIV/AIDS related educational performances during half-times of soccer games throughout the region
  • Voluntary Testing and Counseling (VCT) - services are available for all community members but focuses on youth and adolescents
  • Micro-finance - new economic development opportunities to provide employment and sustainability
